The challenge

A vital service held back by outdated digital tools.

Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) provides a vital, life-saving emergency response service across Scotland - entirely funded by public donations. Their previous website, built in 2017, had reached its limits.

A restrictive CMS, dated design and poor mobile optimisation were causing user friction and making content management time-consuming and costly. With 60% of visitors accessing via mobile, donor journeys lacked fluidity, campaign pages couldn’t be easily built, and donation tracking was unreliable.

The charity needed a future-proof platform that reflected its professionalism and sensitivity, supported digital growth, and made it easier for supporters to engage and give.

SCAA wanted to evolve from a functional website to a digital experience that truly reflected its purpose - fast, responsive, life-saving service delivered with compassion and care.

The new website needed to:

  • Deliver an intuitive, mobile-first user experience that inspired action.
  • Integrate with Donorflex CRM to streamline donor management.
  • Ensure GDPR compliance, including transparent consent and data handling.
  • Provide flexibility for campaign-specific donation pages and media-rich storytelling.

Giant Digital worked closely with SCAA to design and build a website that combined technical excellence with emotional impact - a platform that balanced innovation with sensitivity.

Key features included:

  • Sensitive UX design to handle helicopter flight details with care, avoiding public disclosure of incident specifics.
  • Responsive, interactive front-end, including a dynamic homepage map with real-time tooltips for enhanced engagement.
  • Integration with Giant Giving, Giant’s custom donation platform, providing SCAA with a secure, flexible way to manage online donations and campaigns.
  • Responding to a mid-project brand refresh to modernise SCAA’s visual identity while preserving familiarity and trust.
  • Privacy-focused GDPR compliance, with a custom consent management system and automatic data clean-up after 180 days.

These features combined to deliver a robust, future-ready website capable of supporting SCAA’s growing digital presence and fundraising ambitions.

The impact

The new SCAA website has transformed how the charity engages with its supporters. Donors now enjoy a streamlined, mobile-optimised giving experience, and the internal team has greater autonomy over content and campaign management.

Privacy and compliance processes have been strengthened through GDPR-driven automation, while integration with Donorflex and Giant Giving has improved data flow and reduced administration.

Since launch, Giant Digital has continued to work in partnership with SCAA, most notably through the Make Your Mark campaign, which invited supporters to add their name or a loved one’s name to the tail of a new helicopter when donating. This ongoing collaboration demonstrates the site’s adaptability and the strength of the client–agency relationship.
