Accessibility in Action: Reimagining the Digital Experience
At Giant Digital, we believe that digital inclusion is a right, not a luxury. That is why we are proud to share our recent partnership with British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF): a project that brings our values to life and demonstrates what is possible when empathy meets innovation.
We were invited to redesign BWBF’s website to better reflect their incredible mission and serve the needs of their blind and partially sighted users. And for us, it was never just about ticking the boxes on an accessibility checklist. It was about creating a space where everyone feels welcome, supported, and in control – built from the ground up.
Designing for inclusion from the ground up
Accessibility is not just a feature you add at the end. It is something you bake into the process from day one. And that is exactly what we did.
From our very first conversations with the BWBF team, it was clear that their users needed more than a standard website. They needed an experience that was simple, adaptable and respectful of the challenges many visitors face every day - especially those navigating the internet with screen readers, keyboard-only access or light sensitivity.
So, we partnered with Access by Design – led by Clive Loseby, Global Leader in Website Accessibility – to guide our approach. And, together with BWBF, we set ourselves a clear goal: to build a website that not only meets WCAG AA standards but lays the groundwork for WCAG 3.0, AAA considerations, and raises the bar for inclusive, user-first design.
What we built - and why it matters
We worked closely with the BWBF team and co-designed every feature with care, keeping accessibility at the heart of each decision.
Here is what we delivered:
- Theme switchers: Users can toggle between light, dark, and high-contrast modes, making the site more comfortable for those with visual impairments or light sensitivity.
- Keyboard navigation: For users who rely on keyboard input, we developed a fully navigable interface that does not require a mouse.
- Font size adjusters: With adjustable text sizes built in, users can tailor the content to their needs – whether for comfort or clarity.
- WCAG AA compliance, and beyond: Every detail was crafted to align with current accessibility standards, and where we could go further, we did. We also kept WCAG 3.0 in mind, focusing not just on compliance, but on creating a truly meaningful user experience.
These tools might seem simple, but for someone who has felt excluded or frustrated by digital barriers, they can be transformative.
Why it is bigger than one website
Too often, accessibility gets pushed aside, especially when budgets are tight and teams are stretched. But this project proves that you do not need a massive budget to make a real difference.
Creating an accessible website is not just about compliance. It is about ensuring that every supporter, volunteer, or beneficiary can engage with your organisation - on their terms.
For BWBF, that meant creating a website that reflects the same care and respect they show through their services. For us, it meant setting a benchmark: proof that ethical organisations can lead the way toward a web that’s inclusive by default.
The power of lived experience
The most meaningful feedback comes from the people who use the site day in and day out. These stories help us understand what is working, where we can improve, and how inclusive design genuinely changes lives.
This project has been about harnessing technical expertise to deliver on our values and vision for our users. We are delighted that our new website is compliant with key accessibility guidance and delivering an experience that puts the needs of people living with sight loss first. But launching our new website is the beginning, not the end of this journey. The success of this project will be measured every day, in the experience of those who come to us. By listening to people living with sight loss, we will ensure our website thrives as a place where everyone feels welcome, inspired and able to access our life-changing support.
Our approach: built around you
Every project we deliver follows a simple, collaborative process that ensures no voice goes unheard:
- Consultation & strategy: We start by listening. We get to know your goals, your audiences, and the barriers you want to break down.
- Design & development: Then we build, putting accessibility front and centre, crafting intuitive designs and seamless user journeys.
- Testing and feedback: Before launch, we test everything - with real users where possible - to make sure your website works for the people it is meant to serve.
- Ongoing support: Accessibility is not a one-and-done deal. We provide continuous support, helping you adapt to evolving needs and standards.
Why accessibility matters to every organisation
Whether you are a national charity or a small nonprofit, building an accessible website is not just a technical decision, it is a values decision. And the benefits speak for themselves:
- Reach more people: Open your digital doors to a broader audience - including those often excluded from traditional experiences.
- Boost trust and engagement: Show your supporters that you care about how they access your content, not just what it says.
- Stay compliant, stay confident: Meet legal requirements, reduce risk, and stay ahead of future accessibility regulations.
- Strengthen your mission: Create a digital presence that fully reflects your organisation’s values: inclusion, dignity, and fairness.
Looking ahead: a more inclusive digital future
Our work with British Wireless for the Blind Fund is just one example of what is possible when accessibility is taken seriously. But it is also part of a much bigger vision – a web that is inclusive by default, led by organisations committed to ethical digital experiences.
Every website we build is a step towards that future, because accessibility is not an add-on. It is a foundation.
